The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

JOB SUMMARY :

Responsible for the distribution and provision of safe, effective, and timely medication therapy through drug utilization review and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Responsible for directing any combination of pharmacy technologists, pharmacy learners, or support staff in the mixing, packaging, labeling, and distribution of medications.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Interprets orders for medications and ensures therapy is appropriate for patient's diagnosis, weight, concomitant medications, drug allergies and age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).

  • Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications per orders in all patient care areas in accordance with departmental and applicable laws.

  • Detects, prevents, evaluates, and reports, when necessary, Adverse Drug Events.

  • Utilizes professional judgment to review medication interactions, contraindications, and disease state precautions, then makes appropriate recommendations to the prescriber to reduce risk and increase quality of medication treatment.

  • Maintains accurate records and patient medication profiles, and develops patient care plans.

  • Provides medication counseling to patients to ensure accurate understanding of treatment purpose, duration, special instructions of use, storage, and common adverse effects.

  • Provides drug information to members of the healthcare team.

  • Recommends and administers vaccines.

  • Participates in quality assurance programs in the Department of Pharmacy.

  • Supervises the activities of supportive personnel and reinforces policies and procedures.

  • Assists in the training and development of departmental staff.

  • Serves as preceptor and/or advisor for pharmacy learners.

  • Participates in pharmaceutical continuing education, in accordance with departmental performance standards.

  • Communicates effective with other pharmacy employees, healthcare professionals and patients.

  • Maintains a neat, clean and organized work area.

  • Operates within regulations, policies, and procedures to minimize drug diversion and to maintain compliance within pharmacy operations, 340B program, medication quality assurance, security, and disposal of hazardous waste medications.

  • Adheres to internal controls as established for department and all applicable laws.

  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES :

  • Specific vision abilities are required including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, regularly required to talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms; sit; stoop; kneel; crouch; and stand.

  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to function independently.

  • Ability to demonstrate skills in prioritization, problem solving, and time management.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced setting in under high-pressure situations.

EQUIPMENT :

Standard office and pharmaceutical equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :

  • Standard pharmacy environment.

  • May be required to work weekends and shift rotations.

  • May be required to work after hours and extended shifts during emergencies.

  • May be required to work on-call.

  • May be required to travel to correctional facilities and other office locations.

  • May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications and disoriented or combative patients or others.

May be located within the confines of a prison, jail or juvenile detention center. Security clearance is required; pre-employment drug testing is also required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE :

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

  • Licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas or eligible to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas. Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas at the time of hire.

  • Obtain Immunization Certification within six (6) months of hire.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE :

  • Three (3) years of related experience.

  • PGY1 or PGY2 Residency training.

Salary is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.
